I know this is too crazy for some people. Some people don't want to think about where there food comes from. I understand but the way I see it, the animals we have are not being treated ill. If you want to see what I mean watch the video at http://www.meat.org/. While this website is about the vegetarian diet, I am more about a responsible diet.
So if you can find a good farmer or even produce and hunt your own meat the better. We buy meat that has never had any injections (no steroids or antibiotics!), on a free range grass diet without any pesticides used! We use the bones for bone broth and to give to our dogs and even the fat for soap. The hide is given to the taxidermist to be used.
So for your delish veggies and fruits here are a few places to look!!
First I would say to start your own garden!! This year will be our first year to try one, due to many moves; we have never been settled enough to start one. Therefore, this spring you can be with us through I am sure many failures! I have what you call a black thumb!
Also check local farmers markets and farmers. I found in this particular area its very hard to find farmers that think the same way I do. I once asked a strawberry farmer if he used pesticides and which one, he's response was "I use anything and everything I can, you cant produce fruit without pesticides". Well that was a huge turn off, especially since pesticide have just been introduced since post WWII era, around 1940, read more here http://www.epa.gov/pesticides/factsheets/chemicals/ddt-brief-history-status.htm
I have not used Bountiful Baskets before, however they are coming to my area. In Jan 2014 I will place my first order. I have heard great things about them! http://www.bountifulbaskets.org/
Azure Standard is a great company to buy from as well. You will have a date and pick up location for your area. You have to request and account, so it takes time to set up. Once set up you can order a huge variety of items and bulk items. The bad thing is that you have to place an order in advance then pick up, so pay close attention to the ordering dates! Check them out at https://www.azurestandard.com/
Bulk Natural Foods is another great way to order food its similar to Azure Standard but on a smaller scale. http://bulknaturalfoods.com/
Check out Local Harvest to see what's in your area at http://www.localharvest.org. I would be sure to talk to your farmers about what pesticides and fertilizers they use! Just because they are local doesn't mean they are organic!
